Benefits

Private Health Cover provides you with the following benefits:

Surgery in a private hospital
With a Hospital and Surgical base plan, you’re covered for just about every cost associated with hospital and surgical care. It means you can rest assured that you’ll be well looked after without having to worry about the costs of your care.

You’ll get reimbursement for some or all of your costs for surgery in a private hospital in New Zealand. These may include surgeon’s and anaesthetist’s fees, theatre fees, post-operative and ancillary charges, high dependency unit charges, nursing fees, prostheses, hospital accommodation, diagnostic procedures, and specialist consultations. Referral from a specialist is required.

Treatment in a private hospital
You’ll also get reimbursement for some or all of your costs for private hospital treatment that doesn’t require surgery. These may include charges for chemotherapy and radiotherapy, prescription drugs listed on the PHARMAC schedule, cardiologist fees and angiography, hospital accommodation, diagnostic procedures, and specialist consultations. Referral from a specialist is required.

Diagnostic procedures
In addition, you’re covered for the costs of certain diagnostic procedures recommended by a specialist or general practitioner, for instance CT scans, MRI scans, angiograms, colonoscopy, gastroscopy and laparoscopy.

Oral surgery
Cover also includes surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth by an oral or maxillofacial surgeon. Referral from a GP is required.

Other benefits
Private Health Cover also has many other benefits, including cover for specialist minor surgery, complications of pregnancy and childbirth, medical misadventure benefit, funeral benefits, public hospital cash benefit, hospice cover, home nursing, and overseas treatment grants.

Additional options
Some health insurers allow you to choose from a number of extra options to add to the base policy, enabling you to customise a policy that best suits you and your lifestyle.

• A specialist option, which covers costs related to specialist consultations and some diagnostic procedures, after referral by a GP and which do not result in hospitalisation.
• Dental and optical care
• GP option
• Option to cover other health practitioners, e.g. osteopath, chiropractor or acupuncturist.
• A trauma/critical illness option, which gives a one-off lump sum payment when you’re facing a specific serious health condition for the first time.
• There is also an option available that gives additional cover for most pre-existing medical conditions once the policy has been in force for three years.

Please refer to the relevant policy document for full details of the insurance contract and the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply.
